Dead Stars Review

“Dead Stars” is a story about forbidden love that was written by Paz Benitez Marquez. It tackles not only about love but the various things that come with it and the dilemmas or struggles that inevitably accompany this feeling.
From what I noticed when reading this story was that it had a lot, and I mean a lot of descriptions. Not only about the characters but also of the setting. The descriptions of the scenery and the environment that is within the story was quite detailed and specific which really helped when trying to picture a scene in your head. Such deep and articulate words were used, which is also what made it quite long for a “short story”. But I enjoyed that characteristic because it really made the story come alive.
The dialogues and the rather charismatic exchanges between Alfredo and Julia are some of my favorite parts because of the soft and lighthearted banter between two people. You can see how much they enjoy talking to each other, although in regards to Alfredo, I can agree that it is not right to be flirting with another woman when you are engaged to someone else. Although I liked the temporary chemistry between Julia and Alfredo, I really did feel bad for Esperanza.
When Alfredo was pondering about who he would choose between Esperanza and Julia, he had to choose between something he wants to do and something he has to do. I can say that I relate to his dilemma in a different context because it is true that there are times when choosing what I want to do and what has to be done is quite difficult. This showed how our emotions can sway our rationality and influence our decisions if we let it.
Another theme in the story is about how much other people’s opinions can affect us and our decisions. The story explained how society can have a big influence on the way we act and how we interact with others. This is noticeable when Alfredo was listing out the reasons why he should pick Esperanza because of things like security, reputation, and promises done to the others family.
After I read the story I also realized how much love can make us feel various emotions and can make us do things we wouldn’t normally do. This reminds me that if you love someone or something, you must let them go if it is what would make them happy. Because love is about giving too, not just taking.
Ultimately, I truly loved the symbolism and the analogy with dead stars, Alfredo Salazar thought his love for Julia Salas was as strong as it was when he first met her. But after years where their ends meet once again, he realized that he no longer felt anything for her. His love was like the bright light of a dead star, thinking there is still something there, something existing, yet the truth of the matter was that there was nothing left but the remnants of his memories and long lost feelings for her. Like the remaining light that glows from a star after its last moments.
